Freshman applicants
Find out what you need for consideration at VCU. It will only take a moment to glance through the academic requirements for admission. You’ll find important information presented in an easy-to-read format.
Fall 2008 applications
The VCU Office of Undergraduate Admissions is currently still accepting applications from freshman applicants. However, VCU has received a record number of freshman applications this year. Many programs at the university have met their capacity for fall 2008; therefore, students are being placed on a waiting list. Applications received after our freshman deadline of Feb. 1 will be considered only if space is available.
Transfer applicants to undergraduate programs in the VCU School of the Arts’ visual arts or music programs should submit their applications by the May 1 transfer deadline. Transfer applicants to undergraduate programs on the Monroe Park Campus other than those in the School of the Arts should submit their applications by the June 1 transfer deadline. Transfer applicants interested in health sciences programs on the MCV Campus should see specific program information for deadlines.
Requirements
Candidates for admission to VCU are reviewed based on their academic performance in an accredited high school or on GED scores and either SAT Reasoning Test or ACT scores. The college preparatory curriculum is highly preferred, and a minimum of 21 units is required for admission to all programs on the Monroe Park Campus.
Applicants must present a minimum of:
- 4 units of English.
- 3 units of mathematics (including algebra I and either geometry or algebra II).
- 3 units of history, social studies or government.
- 3 units of science (at least one laboratory).
- 3 units of one foreign language or 2 units of two foreign languages are recommended.
Extracurricular activities and employment experience may strengthen an application. Essays are required for scholarship consideration and for School of Nursing applicants. Recommendations are generally not required, although a letter and high school profile sent by a guidance counselor may be useful during application review.
Freshmen also are required to take SATs and have a personal computer.
Test scores
Yes, VCU requires applicants to submit SAT or ACT scores. We prefer scores from the SAT Reasoning Test and do not require Subject Tests.
Freshman applicants under 22 years of age and all freshmen applying to the School of Nursing must submit official SAT or ACT scores.
Applicants whose native language is one other than English must submit scores for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) in addition to any other required test scores.
G2G Mobile@VCU
All VCU students are required to have a personal computer, and the G2G is here to help! Every year, the university establishes minimum specifications for computers, which are revised annually for each new entering class. Let G2G help with your purchasing decisions for personal computers.
Please note: Some departments and schools recommend a specific configuration from among the options outlined by the university. You will need to check with the school or college in which you are enrolling to ensure that the minimum specifications are sufficient for your course of study.
