Landmark Theater
6 North Laurel Street
Formerly known as The Mosque, the Richmond Landmark Theater was built in 1926 by Shriners as their Acca Temple Shrine. The city of Richmond purchased the theater in 1940 and renovated it in 1994-95. Today, the theater — located across the street from Monroe Park — seats 3,565 and hosts a variety of events, including concerts, lectures, ballet, children’s theater and school commencements.
Cathedral of the Sacred Heart
800 South Cathedral Place
Next to the Landmark Theater is the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, designed by New York architect Joseph H. McGuire and Virginia’s finest ecclesiastical example of the Italian Renaissance Revival style. The Cathedral serves as the main church of the Catholic Diocese of Richmond and as the local parish for its Richmond congregation.
Monroe Park
Monroe Park, the namesake of one of VCU’s two campuses, offers students a large, green space to sunbathe, throw a Frisbee or hang out with friends.
