Producing documentaries
“There are a lot of opportunities and for a film major you can make anything happen for yourself.”
“I’ve been with VCU TV/HD for about two and a half years. We make cinéma vérité documentaries in high definition and recently won two Capital Emmy Awards. Two of my classmates were interns before they became producers and asked me to come on board. I did a lot of manual labor for some projects and that built up a really good resume. I started out as an intern and was hired as a producer a year later.
“We have access to the best equipment in the area. There’s a lot of freedom for students to be creative. We produce work from concept to final cut and have a lot of independence to make that happen. It’s a good environment to learn production work and it’s a good environment to meet other people with the same background as you. VCU TV/HD is growing into an exciting new program.
“I’ve met a lot of people and gotten my foot in the door. I want to be able to create things that I’m proud of, that benefit the community more so than myself.”
Finding your muse
“VCU was the only film program that I could find in-state and it had a really good art program, the best actually. It was my No. 1 choice and I knew I would be pursuing a solid degree in film here.
“I like everything about going to a school in the city. Everything is accessible and there’s a lot of culture and diversity.
“It’s been a great experience. There are a lot of opportunities and for a film major you can make anything happen for yourself.”
Staying connected to campus
“I lived on campus for about four years. The first year I lived in Capital Garage Apartments in the bunk-bed system. After that I was a resident assistant for three years at Broad and Belvidere Apartments and I had a really good time with that. I like living on campus because everything is closer and it’s an easier commute. I have good relationships with my professors and with the student body. I think being an RA helped because you get to know everybody.”
