‘I feel pride’
“What makes it worth it is it will all pay off once you graduate.”
“A lot of people say, ‘you're an out-of-state student. Why come to VCU?’ I always tell them that I'm getting an experience here that I would probably not get back at home. I made the best choice ever in my life so far because I'm independent now. I get a chance to do stuff on my own. And I'm learning something every day, not just in the classroom but also outside of it.”
“I feel pride and am just very happy when I go home. It’s a great experience to know that you get to do something that someone else in your family may have not done. But it’s also like they are sharing that experience even though they're not here – they're with you in spirit.”
The best things in life are free
“VCU has one-on-one tutoring and it’s absolutely free. You don't have to pay extra to get extra help here. I learned about the tutoring services my first semester, freshman year. You can just drop in or you can sign up for one-on-one tutoring. Sometimes I just drop in and get the answer to a specific question or a chemistry problem. Other than that, I can sign up for one-on-one help and work with the same person once a week. It helps because other than them sitting there helping you, you're having a conversation with them and learning more about your major in general because they may be an upperclassmen in the same major.”
‘A good feeling’
“What makes it worth it is, of course, knowing that it will all pay off once you graduate. But other than that, when you get a test score back or you get a question right, it really makes you feel good. Even when we all are working in study groups together and somebody asks a question and you're the only one who knows the answer, that’s a good feeling, too. It’s a lot of work but if it’s something that you like, it will be fun because you get to do what you want to do.”
