‘Why our nation does what it does’
“My ultimate goal is to thoroughly understand my United States government and to know what role I'm going to play in it.”
“The funny thing is I was a homeland security minor before I was a political science major. Second semester of freshman year, when I was still a mass comm major, I picked up homeland security as a minor because I just said, ‘you know what? This is the only school that offers it and I’m going to take advantage of it.’
“Homeland security is putting a new face on politics because of trying to help people understand emergency preparedness, coming out with a plan before everything happens. All this learning from just entry-level homeland security classes has helped me say ‘this is why our nation does what it does.’
“Politics is in our lives every day, whether we want to accept it or not. So my goal on graduating from VCU – my ultimate goal – is to thoroughly understand my United States government and to know what role I'm going to play in it.”
Falling in love
“First semester, sophomore year, I'm taking two communications classes and I realized: this major isn't for me. I was also taking a Poli Sci 103 class at the same time. It was just an introduction to local, state and national government. And I fell in love.
“Honestly, I think my grades this semester are the best they've ever been because I really fell in love with my classes. It's one thing to like your classes and another to just take them. To me, that was the difference.”
‘Like nothing else’
“I love to dance and I got into groupModa because I liked the general idea of incorporating fashion with dance and with skits and themes. There’s no stereotype look, there's no stereotype size, race or anything. With most fashion shows that I've done before, there's always been the same type of people around. The entire purpose of groupModa is to show different people wearing completely different styles and proving it's all about today’s fashion.”
