Joanne Jensen

Hi there! My name is Joanne Jensen and I am associate director of undergraduate admissions. I joined the staff here in admissions in February 1999, but my relationship with VCU began more than a decade ago.

I started studying English at VCU as a part-time evening student in 1985. After four years of working as a full-time public relations writer and going to school part time, I took a well-needed rest from my academic pursuits. I returned as a full-time student in 1993 and earned my B.A. in English with a minor in writing in May 1996. That year I was granted a graduate teaching assistantship and in 1998 earned my M.A. in English, Writing and Rhetoric. I served as an adjunct instructor in the VCU English Department, teaching English 101 and English 200 before joining the admissions staff.

I am happy to still be a part of the VCU community. The thriving diversity that is VCU is what drew me here and it is what has kept me a part of this university. The global society is represented in our student body as well as in our faculty and staff, while the city of Richmond features a rich and thriving business and cultural atmosphere. This combination provides VCU students the advantage of a real-world education, something future employers will appreciate.

VCU students are provided with opportunities to excel in so many different ways and on so many different levels. Here at VCU we emphasize the importance of general education and focus on across-the-curriculum academics — where students discover that all they learn is connected. VCU students are taught how to apply their knowledge through internships, cooperative education and work-study programs.
